One Bluefield college cancels classes, one doesn't

The snowy weather led to canceled classes today at one Bluefield-area university, but not the other. Whether you were sledding down a hill, or sitting perturbed in a class, all depended on which college you attend.

Bluefield College canceled classes today. Students and faculty were scarce. A few students spent the snow day sledding. I spoke with some softball players as they headed to practice. One player said, "I've been asleep until practice. That's the only thing that got me out of bed honestly." A second player said, "I've been doing homework." To which the first player chided, "Oh wow... good student!"
Just three miles away, a very different scene was playing out at Bluefield State. Many students could be seen walking about, because Bluefield State chose NOT to cancel classes. Freshmen Abby Slemp drives all the way from Peterstown. "I kind of think that they should have, you know, because the roads weren't that great. Then I was sitting there in class... 15 minutes later, I got an email saying class was canceled, so..." Frustrated, I imagine? "Yeah, yeah it was frustrating."
Communications Director Kimberly Gross says the school made the best decision they could at the time. "Well, this morning when we were evaluating the situation at 4 am... the weather did not appear to be... as bad as, it ended up being after additional snow fell. Again, we encourage our students and employees to be safe and use their discretion when traveling."

Gross also tells us they have advised professors to excuse any absences related to today's snowy conditions.
