Wyoming County parents rally for teachers ahead of walkout vote

WYOMING COUNTY, W.Va. (WVVA) Parents across Wyoming County were up with the sun Monday to rally for teachers. They turned out all the way from Herndon, Mullens, Pineville, Oceana, Clear Fork, and Baileysville in stand in front of their children's schools in support of teachers.

The rallies come ahead of a critical vote Monday at the Wyoming County Community and Technical College, where teachers and staff will be voting on a proposed walk-out. Their hope is to secure full funding for the Public Employees Insurance Agency (PEIA) and more than the one percent raise proposed by Governor Jim Justice during his State of the State address.

Many of the parents who turned out Monday said they would support a walk-out.

"My neighbor is a teacher. She has two kids and qualifies for CHIP. She has a master's degree. This is simply unacceptable," said parent Christy Seaton.

"The Governor better step up. Come election time, people are going to remember what happens."

Wyoming County Circuit Clerk David 'Bugs' Stover was among those who turned out to rally at Wyoming East. He called on lawmakers and the governor to go back to the drawing table.

"Come on Governor, get down there with the legislature and get this done. We know you're a get it done guy."

Two more counties have teacher meetings scheduled for Monday night, including Raleigh and McDowell counties.
