Tazewell residents attain concealed carry permits

On Saturday, the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office offered concealed carry classes for residents who wanted to better protect themselves in emergencies.

"Things are getting tough, haha. And I just want to... be protected." Howard Beckett and his grandson weren't the only ones taking advantage of the concealed carry class. Around 50 Tazewell County residents attended on Saturday. Major Mike Shawver says they've been offering this class for around 4 years. "So we approached the sheriff with this idea that, we could create a power point presentation, and hold a class, to allow the citizens of Tazewell County to take our class, free of charge, and obtain their concealed carry permits."
After the classroom portion was over, those who wanted to get better at their aim, came out to the gun range. Steve Branch is the pastor of Destiny Outreach Ministries, which sits on Route 460. "With us being on the main drag there, it's a... what they say would be a soft target."
Branch says several members of his church were also getting their permits. "And again, if nothing else, just to be able to defend ourselves, our family members, our home."
Shawver adds, "It's really cool when they come to our classes, then actually get to go to the range, and fire a firearm for the first time in their life."

If you live in Tazewell County and would like to be involved in their next class, you're encouraged to contact Major Shawver at 276-988-1151.
