Women's Resource Center finding new ways to raise funds

Lip-syncing game shows and local contests are all the rage these days and one non-profit that helps abused women in four southern West Virginia counties is hoping the trend can help fund part of its program.

Faced with decreasing grant funding, the Women's Resource Center has launched a creative way to raise money to care for and support women in abusive relationships.

“Lip-sync battle is a hugely popular thing right now, there's three of four different shows on TV about it, so we decided that would be really cool and something that would appeal to all ages," Dee Sizemore of the Women's Resource Center said.

Saturday was the first of four contests, this one at Fayetteville High School, featuring lip-syncing contestants performing their favorite tunes.

"I learned about this about a month ago,” contestant Daniel Dyal said. “I've always been into theatrics and I love to perform for people, and I chose Lady Gaga because she's a very high energy artist and I love the song."

The Fayetteville High School senior won Saturday's preliminary round and will move on to compete in the finals.

He says performing is a passion of his, but it's just as important for him to contribute to an organization that he believes changes lives.

"I've seen people come into this organization feeling like they were nothing and then leaving with the confidence to live," Dyal said.

“One of the most important things about events like this is us getting out into these communities that we serve and letting people know who we are and what we do and we're here to help," Sizemore said.

If this competition looks like fun to you, there's another competition at Crossroads Mall on February 24th.
