Cold weather, rising electric bills

Posted:

In West Virginia, it was the coldest first week of January on record, and that has a lot to do with expensive power bills. WVVA's Rob Martin's power bills are soaring. First, they were $100, then $300. He lives in a small, well insulated two bedrooms house, running on two baseboard heaters.

However, it's typical for an electric bill to be $100 in November, $200 in December, but $320 in January is more than normal, and that's because of the cold from December to the first part of January. Most heating systems have a difficult time in that type of cold.

The problem is also heating with electricity. Think twice if you think space heaters save on costs. A space heater can cost $4 a day. A possible solution could be a wood-burning stove.
