Town of Rainelle passes rate hike to cover loan for water system upgrade

RAINELLE, WV (WVVA) -

Rainelle's town council passed a water rate hike for the town's residents, in order to cover the cost of a badly needed water system replacement.

Tensions flared Monday night at Rainelle's town council meeting, as around 50 residents voiced their concerns over an increase in their water bills.

Rainelle Mayor Andy Pendleton says she began the process of upgrading Rainelle's water system seven years ago when she became mayor; a project that was badly needed.

But some residents are unhappy about the rate hike. For the average residence, it will cost almost $8 more each month. For commercial customers, it will be on average an extra $20 per month.

The rate increase was higher than anticipated, due to the loss of nearly 140 water customers after all the damage caused by the 2016 flood.

The additional revenue will go toward paying the nearly $2.5 million loan over a 40 year period.
