(WVVA) -

A child in West Virginia has died from the flu.

According to Howard Gamble, administrator of the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department, a pediatric death due to influenza was reported to the agency.

"It's a very unusual and unfortunate event," said Gamble

The adolescent, who died on Monday, was from Ohio County.

Gamble said health care providers are required to report flu deaths of children. He said the investigation into the child's death has just begun.

Nationally, 30 influenza-associated pediatric deaths have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during the 2017-2018 flu season.

"Annual influenza vaccination is the best method for preventing flu and its potentially severe complications in children," according to the CDC.  Click here for more information on flu prevention and treatment.
