West Virginia snow removal crews say they're ready

It was 60-something degrees Friday afternoon, but with winter weather advisories posted this evening, road crews are concerned. They are also ready on this holiday weekend.

Division ten of the West Virginia department of highways will likely be busy in the overnight hours. Our mild weather is just about done with, and what's tricky is that those temps will drop from the 40s before midnight, down into the 20s in just a few hours.

The division says that initial coating of snow is often the most dangerous time for drivers, as they haven't adjusted their driving to it. Also, the sudden temperature drop could “flash freeze” water on roadways.

A brief transition to freezing rain could also complicate matters before a full transition to snow sometime after midnight.

However, West Virginia road crews deploy all trucks during a snow event, regardless of forecast amounts. The department says there is never a “limited” effort in this regard.
