A food bank in McDowell County received a welcome surprise Friday.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing of West Virginia donated a forklift to Five Loaves and Two Fishes.

U.S. Senator Joe Manchin and West Virginia Senator Richard Ojeda helped facilitate the donation. The food bank’s old forklift broke down last month and it was beyond repair.

Five Loaves and Two Fishes is located just outside of Welch. Volunteer Linda McKinney says the new forklift will help them in their efforts to serve area families in need.

"We process anywhere from 19,000 to 36,000 pounds of food a month," said McKinney. "There are no staff here. We're not paid employees. We're volunteers. So there's no staff here to unload that. So we depend solely on this forklift to move our food around."

The propane-powered forklift was delivered by the Jefferds Corporation and the company pledged to help with future maintenance on the machine.
