Mt. Hope police officer honored for heroic deed

In life or death situations, first responders have only moments to react.

Tuesday night, one officer in Fayette County was recognized for his quick thinking.

A surprise ceremony took place before the Mt. Hope town council meeting for Cpl. Levi Garretson of the Mt. Hope Police Dept.

WVVA News reported back in September of Garretson's rescue of an elderly woman from a blaze at her home at the Midtown Terrace Apartments.

Family and friends who were in on the surprise were on hand to see Garretson honored.

"I went ahead and kicked the door in, noticed that there was a 99 year old woman in the hospital bed,” Garretson said. “She was in the living room, I went over and picked her up, carried her outside, put her in the ambulance, and then I went back inside and was able to put the fire out."

The ceremony came as a complete surprise to the officer.

"Chief kept it a pretty good secret, so it was a shock and just happy that I was awarded that,” Garretson said. “It was an honor, definitely."

In addition to receiving a special life-saving medal, Garretson was also read a proclamation from the town as well as the state legislature heralding his heroic actions.

And to no surprise, Garretson says he was just doing his duty and would do the same thing again if necessary.
