West Virginia city passes Human Rights Commission ordinance

Posted: Updated:

FAIRMONT, W.Va. (AP) - A city council in West Virginia has passed a controversial ordinance reviving its Human Rights Commission after a near 30-year hiatus.

Local news outlets report the Fairmont City Council voted 7-2 to pass the ordinance Tuesday evening. It also adds gender identity and sexual orientation to the list of discriminated classes.

The Human Rights Commission will serve primarily in an educational capacity, informing groups of equal-rights laws and making recommendations to the city council.

Dozens of residents on both sides of the issue spoke to the council before the vote. Some who spoke in favor of the ordinance said it was necessary to ensure the inclusion and protection of all Fairmont residents. Many who opposed the measure expressed concern about the safety of the community.
