UPDATE: Name released in deadly I-77 crash

MERCER COUNTY (WVVA) -

Police have released the name of the person killed in a fatal collision on Interstate 77 in Mercer County.

Cody Kincaid, 27, of the Beckley area died at the scene. 

According to Sgt. M.R. Crowder with the West Virginia State Police, Kincaid was traveling the wrong way in a 2011 Jeep Wrangler. The Jeep struck a tractor trailer head-on in the northbound lanes and then crashed into a pickup truck carrying a load of air conditioning units.  The accident occurred around 5:45 a.m. Wednesday near mile marker 18.

A second person in the Jeep was flown to Charleston Area Medical Center. The extent of their injuries is not known. It is unclear who was diving the SUV. 

Sgt. Crowder said a third person was taken to Princeton Community Hospital.

One lane remains closed as of 3:30 p.m.. At one point, traffic was backed up for more than five miles. 

A crash reconstruction team was called in to assist in the investigation.

At least one person is dead after an early morning accident on Interstate 77 near mile marker 18 in Mercer County.

The crash involved one tractor trailer and two vehicles. It happened around 5:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Drivers should avoid traveling northbound on I-77 near the West Virginia Travel Plaza. One of two northbound lanes reopened at 11:45 a.m. Traffic is moving slowly now. At one point, vehicles were backed up more than five miles. 

The cause of the wreck remains under investigation. According to the West Virginia State Police, the driver of a Jeep traveling southbound in the northbound lanes crashed head-on into a tractor trailer. Witnesses say the big rig was hauling mail.  One person died at the scene and another was flown to the hospital.
