City of Bluefield receives grant for development

An important announcement today concerning economic development in the city of Bluefield. At today's Board of Directors meeting, Director of Economic Development Jim Spencer announced the city is receiving a grant. The more than 2-million-dollar grant comes from the federal Economic Development Administration. With the grant, the city plans to renovate the abandoned building at 1600 Bluefield Avenue and make it a "Commercialization Station." Once brought up to the city's building code, the structure could be used by the City of Bluefield to help new manufacturing companies grow. Spencer likens the facility, and the help the city will provide for the startups, to the training wheels on a child's bike. "Our goal is to be the training wheels for startup companies. 83 percent of businesses that go through an incubation period will stay in that region. So our goal is to start our own businesses that will be right here in the area."

In the public hearing, Spencer reminded residents that this is a grant, and not a loan. So this award from the EDA does not add any debt to the city's budget.
