Gymnasts hone their skills in Bluefield

Gymnasts were practicing their routines in the town of Bluefield Saturday. The gymnasts range in age from toddlers, up to college students.

Peak Gymnastics holds practice every Saturday morning. At THIS practice, many gymnasts started out at the uneven bars, working on their kips. On a different set of bars, several gymnasts were also working on portions of their dismounts. Though boys are welcome to perform, coach Melody Honaker says girls are usually the ones who are most interested. "We do have a few boys who participate. Typically, in our area, there's more female... it's just a female dominated sport."
One of the gymnasts working on her routines was 14-year-old Catherine Stress. Six years ago, Stress saw the fun other gymnasts were having, and wanted to get involved herself! Stress says, "It was when they had a different coach. They were going upstairs, because they had a meet the week before, so they were celebrating, because they all did really good. And I really liked it. Everyone just got along, and it looked really cool."
But it's not all fun and games. Ever heard the cliche, 'no pain, no gain'? Blisters from the bars can be a common occurrence. So who says girls aren't tough? The gymnasts finished off their day by working on their floor exercises. For Natalie Honaker and some of the other gymnasts at Peak, they have some big goals in mind. When asked if she wants to make it to the Olympics, she responded "I really want to do that, yes!"
