Americana themed quilts on display at Appalachian Arts Center

Along Route 19 in Cedar Bluff, you'll find the Appalachian Arts Center. The center is divided into small gallery spaces, but also features a rotating exhibition space, which showcases regional artisans.

The Americana Quilt Challenge has been taking place all summer at the Appalachian Arts Center. Director Sarah Romeo says the idea for this year's patriotic theme came from a suggestion. "Because it was an election year. We announced the actual theme back in the Fall of last year. Americana was a good theme for this year. But we do change the theme yearly."
Though the quilt work can be beautiful to look at, it IS still a competition, with prizes to be won. "We have three monetary prizes, and this year, we're also going to give some fun prizes that don't have any funds attached to them."
All of the quilts entered into the challenge are on display, and quilters from around the region have submitted their work. One of the sewers competing, Mary Gobble, explains how she came up with the design of her quilt. "I just wanted to do it because I had seen it in a magazine. When this opportunity came up, that was the one that came to mind to do. I enjoyed doing this because it has several different techniques in it."
For Gobble, sewing quilts is a hobby that brings a lot of pleasure to her retirement. "It's very relaxing and enjoyable to me. I enjoy seeing the progress, and the designs come together, when the quilt is finished."

The Americana Quilt exhibit will run through September 9, when a reception will be held to honor the quilters. During the reception, awards will be handed out, and some of the quilts will be on sale for the public.
