Raleigh County man pleads guilty to 2013 murder

BECKLEY, W.Va. (WVVA)  Prosecutors called 'theft' the motive in a 2013 shooting that left one man dead.

As part of a plea deal with prosecutors, Mickey Daniel of Edwight pleaded guilty Friday to the October, 2013 murder of Johnny Condia, 77, of Dameron.

During Friday's hearing, Prosecuting Attorney Kristen Keller said Daniel was spotted by multiple witnesses not only driving Condia's vehicle on the day of the murder, but also attempting to push the vehicle off a Bolt cliff after Condia had been pushed out of his own car in  Arnett.

Keller said Condia died of a gunshot wound to the back but did not pass away immediately. She said Condia told firefighters who were among the first at the scene that he was 'shot by Mickey.' She also said he identified Daniel later at the hospital while being questioned by Raleigh County Sheriff's Det. Corey Suman.

As part of the agreement, Daniel pleaded guilty to 1st Degree Murder with Mercy and Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony. Judge Burnside affirmed the prosecution's recommendation of Mercy, which means Daniel will be eligible for parole after 15 years.

Following his plea, Daniel was given an opportunity to apologize or make a statement to the court and the victim's family but declined.

"It still strikes you every time. At the end, the judge asks him if he has anything to say. It's an opportunity, if you have remorse, to express it. The fact is murderers like them have no remorse and it's hard for the rest of us to accept," said Keller.

Condia's daughter, who had a three-month old child at the time of the murder, also addressed the court, calling the last four years "heartbreaking" for her family.
