UPDATE: Man suspected in Bluefield home invasion dies, another charged

BLUEFIELD, WV (WVVA) -

Authorities in Bluefield, WV say the suspect in a home invasion died of an apparent health issue while  being tracked by police.

Police say two men robbed a home and fled on foot Thursday. Mercer County dispatchers tell us that the incident started on Ronceverte Street. The homeowners were taken to the hospital for injuries.

Bluefield Police Chief Dennis Dillow says the suspects were armed and wearing body armor. He says one suspect had a gun while the other had a crowbar. Officers tracked the men to wooded area off of Wyoming Street. The man armed with a gun was found unresponsive.

Chief Dillow says the man passed away from a possible heat stroke or heart attack. His identity is not being released at this time.

Charles Proffit, 29, surrendered to police and was charged with several offenses including burglary and malicious wounding.  He is currently being held in Southern Regional Jail on $100,000 bond.


One person is dead after a home invasion earlier today in the City of Bluefield.

The cause of death has yet to be disclosed to WVVA by the Bluefield Police Department.

According to 911 operators, the incident started around 12:45 p.m. Thursday on Ronceverte Street. The original call came in as a home invasion.

Bluefield, WV Police is handling the investigation.

A UTV unit from the 911 center was dispatched to the area to assist police.  Members of the Bluefield Fire Dept., Bluefield Rescue Squad, and the state medical examiner were also on hand.
