Tazewell school board avoids school closure, passes $58 million budget

With a July 1st deadline looming the Tazewell County School Board was tasked Monday night with dealing with its $1.5 to 1.7 million dollar deficit.

And at the start of the meeting nothing was safe from the budgetary ax. One of four elementary schools; Springville, Dudley, Raven, and north Tazewell were potentially on the chopping block. The board looked at consolidating bus routes, cuts to maintenance facilities and reducing substitute teaching staff.

After looking at all those possibilities, the board determined they could use unused funds from elsewhere and make minor cuts so that none of those schools will close this fiscal year.

But chairman David Woodard is calling this solution a band-aid to the inevitable.

"Every year that you use a surplus of funds to cover a deficit of revenue, you're just putting a band-aid on it and we realize that,” said Woodard. We don't want to do that so we must be more fiscally responsible. We have cut about 1.4 million dollars on average from the school board budget.”

The board passed a budget of $58 million dollars.
