Greenbrier West band student to perform at Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

Tia Walkup was introduced to band in the 5th grade and can play an assortment of instruments. When she saw a chance to audition to be a part of the Macy's Great American Marching Band during the Thanksgiving Day parade, she jumped on it.

"I'm on this like Facebook group with a bunch of other band kids and some girl posted that she got accepted and I was like, 'What's that?' and I kind of looked it up and said 'Yes! I want to do this so bad!' so I just applied and auditioned," said the Junior from Greenbrier West, Tia Walkup.

"She just randomly comes to me, this child of mine, and says 'I'm going to do this now' and I say okay and then a few weeks later it's like okay, we're going to New York," said Tia's mother, Misty Walkup.

It goes without saying this is special for not only Tia, but her parents as well.

"It's unbelievable. I've watched the parade since I was able to remember Thanksgiving and I never thought in a million years one of my kids would go," Tia's mother said.

"It's pretty exciting because I've watched it since I was little and I always said I wanted to go see that and now I'm going to be in it. It's a little scary, but also really exciting," added Tia.

It's almost surreal for the West Virginia native.

"This is prestigious. It's big. I'm small town West Virginia girl that just wants to do this really bad, but I was pretty excited when the acceptance letter came in. I was pretty impressed with myself," continued Tia.

Now she's going to represent the entire state as the only band member chosen from West Virginia.

"It's a little bit terrifying. It's also really exciting. I'm also really excited I'm representing Greenbrier West because we're a small town school," Tia said.

"She has so much drive, so much ambition and I'm going to cry, but we're really really proud of her," Tia's mother said holding back tears.

Tia needs some help raising funds to make it to New York. If you would like to donate you can visit her GoFundMe page or visit the Bank of Monroe and make checks or donations to "Tia Walkup Fund for Macy's Parade," her nonprofit account.
