Mountaineers in McDowell

Residents of McDowell County were the first stop on the list for the President of West Virginia University.

President Gee just started his summer county tour of the state and met each child on the soccer field at Mount View High School today.

Tom Morsi, the President of the McDowell County 4-H Camp, said, “This is a big day for McDowell county for all of our volunteers and coaches and schools that have supported us and started this endeavor. They come down here and help our kids and to show us that McDowell County still matters.”

President Gee didn't travel alone to Southern West Virginia, and the special guest he brought made the time on the soccer field that much more special for the children.

The Varsity Women's Soccer Head Coach, Nikki Izzo-Brown, and 4 of the team players helped with the soccer clinic this afternoon.

The 4-H Camp in McDowell County is trying to install social building skills through the sport of soccer. They are also hoping the kids will get out of the house and form friendships and bonds that will last a lifetime.

While President Gee is hoping that he and his staff inspired some future Mountaineers he said this, “The most important thing is the fact that our university belongs to 1.8 million West Virginians and we belong to the people of Welch.”

If there are any future Mountaineers that would like to stay close to Southern West Virginia, WVU is opening their new campus in Beckley.
