According to the West Virginia State Police, "the circumstances of the fleeing vehicle, location, and lighting" were all contributing factors in the death of Lieutenant Aaron Crook.

Crook, a nine year veteran with the Bluefield PD, died shortly after midnight on May 30 following a multi-vehicle crash on Bluefield Avenue. Four Bluefield, WV officers in two cruisers and a state police trooper were in pursuit of a DUI suspect at the time.

Upon arriving at the location where the fleeing vehicle stopped, Lt. Crook began to exit his patrol vehicle when his vehicle was struck by a responding BPD vehicle. The impact resulted in Lt. Crook being ejected from his vehicle. Seconds later, the responding WVSP vehicle collided with the crashed vehicles.-Lt. Colonel D.L. Bowles, West Virginia State Police
