WYOMING COUNTY, WV (WVVA) -

One Wyoming County family welcomed a couple of surprise visitors earlier this week.

Teresa Byars shot this fantastic video of a mama bear and cub in Herndon, WV on May 24. She told WVVA that bears come to her home all the time. She's not afraid of them, but she knows to keep a safe distance away.

The black bear is West Virginia's official state animal.

According to Naturalist John Northeimer, the black bear (ursus americanus)is the largest animal in the mountain state. There are more than 8,000 black bears in at least 38 counties.  Recent studies indicate the black bear is larger in size in the southern part of the state. Adult black bears can reach four to seven feet from nose to tail, according to the Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries. Their eyes are small,, they have rounded ears, a long snout, a short tail and shaggy hair. Adult female black bears weigh between 90-205 pounds. Males are generally larger and weigh between 130-500 pounds.  They are generally solitary and are active at dusk and dawn. Adult bears can be seen together during breeding season from mid-June to mid-July. Cubs are typically born in January through mid-February and weigh less than a pound.
