After burning for more than a week, a wildfire in Greenbrier County is now 100 percent contained.

The "South Fire" broke out in the Monongahela National Forest on Monday, November 21. Firefighters began the initial attack the following day, including the use of a helicopter to drop buckets of water on the affected area. The wildfire grew from 60 acres to a total 248 acres by Thanksgiving.

“The rain we have experienced the last two days has made a positive impact on our efforts to put this fire out;” said Brett Gore, South Fire Incident Commander.

Fire crews have been sent home or reassigned to other wildfires in the southeast.
