Sheriff's deputies investigate jury duty scam in Raleigh County

BECKLEY (WVVA) Raleigh County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a jury duty scam in Raleigh County.

The scam artists are calling residents saying they have missed a jury duty appointment and there is a warrant for their arrest," said Lt. J.C. Canaday on Friday. "Those perpetrating this fraud are alleging to be deputies with the Raleigh County Sheriff's Dept. and other agencies requesting that victims obtain a Green Dot or other money cards to pay a fine."

Judge H.L. Kirkpatrick said his office has been contacted by a number of the victims, saying the scam artists seem to have detailed information about the court system, using the names of judges and police officers to lure residents.

Further, Judge Kirkpatrick said he nor any of the other judges have ever issued a bench warrant arrest for someone who has failed to show up for jury duty.

"The scheme is very clever. They're familiar with the landscape. They're familiar with the judges and they're using credentials that seem appropriate," said Judge Kirkpatrick.

If anyone has questions or concerns regarding jury duty, Lt. Canaday urges residents to contact the Raleigh County Circuit Clerk's office at 304-255-9119.
