Car dealer donates to WVU, WVU Tech

BECKLEY (WVVA) A West Virginia University student from Shady Spring has a new ride to school thanks to a generous donation from a local car dealer.

L&S Toyota awarded nursing student and junior Jessie Kuhn a lease on a new Toyota to take to Morgantown in the Fall.

The dealer's owner, Shawn Ball, reviewed dozens of applications online, but said it was Kuhn's personal story that took home the prize.

"It very excited and really appreciated. I've never had a car and I'm the youngest of five kids. I always have to find transportation to and from school and now I can do it myself," said Kuhn.

WVU President Gordon Gee was also on hand to accept a $110 thousand dollar check for student scholarships at both WVU and WVU Tech in Beckley.

"I love seeing a great success story like this but the other thing is the Ball family, L&S Toyota, what a great thing to do. And I'm also here to celebrate the grand opening of our campus in Beckley so this is just another reason to celebrate," said Pres. Gee.

In 2015, the Ball family donated $50,000 to establish two endowed scholarships for both WVU Tech engineering and nursing students in Beckley. This academic year, the Ball family has contributed an additional $50,000 to those endowments in addition to $10,000 in general scholarship funds for West Virginia students.
