Gov. Tomblin requests federal assistance in historic West Virginia flooding

(June 25, 2016) – Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has requested a federal Major Disaster Declaration from the Federal Emergency Management Agency  (FEMA) to provide individual assistance for Kanawha, Greenbrier and Nicholas counties, which were severely affected by floods beginning June 23, 2016.

“We appreciate the support of FEMA and our congressional delegation as we work to provide assistance to affected families as quickly as possible,” Gov. Tomblin said. “We realize many other counties experienced significant damage and we will be following up in those areas, but the scope of damage in Kanawha, Greenbrier and Nicholas counties allowed us to proceed with that request immediately. A federal Major Disaster Declaration would provide our residents with the support they need to rebuild and move forward.

Governor Tomblin made an expedited verbal request to FEMA this morning for individual assistance, which provides help to residents and families such as housing and crisis counseling.

West Virginians needing assistance should contact their local offices of emergency management. Contact information for each county office can be found at
