Tazewell business owners optimistic about growth

TAZEWELL, VA (WVVA) “There is such a huge amount of excitement, among everybody in Tazewell these days. We've decided to save the town,” said Nancy Brooks, member of the Tazewell Industrial Development Authority and entrepreneur.

Brooks is restoring a historic property, building a coffee shop and apartment on Main Street.

Vickie Boothe is a store owner who moved her business to Main Street last year.

“I grew up here. I spent a lot of Saturdays walking up and down the streets here in all the different shops,” said Boothe.

She says a few years ago, she would have never moved her shop here.

“Fortunately, I think that is changing. I think we're seeing a movement back to main street,” said Boothe

Tourism is one of the driving factors that is encouraging many entrepreneurs to invest here. Larry Davidson says motorcycle traffic along the route he named “Back of the Dragon” is growing.

“There are 27 million registered motorcycles in the United States,” said Davidson.

He hopes to attract some of those motorcycles to Tazewell County.

“They also need something to eat and a place to stay. As we develop this it's just phenomenal growth that could come from motels, hotels and other eating establishments,” said Davidson.

Coal has been the backbone of the economy in this region for years, but Tazewell town manager Todd Day says that now is the time to diversify the economy.

“We can not sit back and wait on Coal to come back,” said Day. He says something is different in the town.

“You've got the spirit that we finally brought out in the citizens and the businesses on Main Street and they're finally beginning to look around and say, you know what why can't we be successful why can't we make the town of Tazewell the place to be,” said Day.
