UPDATE: Ronceverte man arrested after toddler found unattended in the cold

GREENBRIER COUNTY (WVVA) -

A man is arrested is Greenbrier County after a small child is "found in cold water on the edge of the roadway."

According to Chief J.R. Byer, Jr. with the Ronceverte Police, The 18-month-old boy was wearing only pajamas and was very cold and wet. He was taken to Greenbrier Valley Medical Center by EMS.

The investigation ensued throughout the day, speaking with family members, witnesses, neighbors.  The investigation led officers to a home where the custodian was asleep while another small child was in the home alone.

Drew A. Walton, 21, of Ronceverte was arrested and charged with child neglect creating risk of injury. He was arraigned in front of Magistrate Jim Childers and was placed on a $2,000 surety bond.

It was reported Tuesday that the child did not appear to have any life-threatening injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.  The second child in the home was placed in the care of Child Protective Services. The mother of the children was at work when her children were left unattended.

Chief Byer  expressed gratitude for Deputy R.D. Baker and Child Protective Services for their assistance in the investigation.

Police in Greenbrier County launch an investigation after a 18-month-old boy is found unattended in a ditch.

The child was found around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday by two people driving along Greenbrier Avenue in Ronceverte.

According to police, witnesses reported seeing the child near the edge of the road in a pile of snow and water. Police say the baby was in about four inches of water from melting snow. 

Ronceverte Police Chief J.R. Byer says the baby was taken to Greenbrier Valley Medical Center. The child did not appear to have any life-threatening injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.

Child Protective Services and Ronceverte Police are investigating the case. The mother of the baby and her boyfriend have been spoken to. CPS removed another young child from the home. 

WVVA spoke to the mother of the child off camera, She says she understands that the police and CPS are doing what they have to do. She says she was at work this morning when the baby was found outside. Her boyfriend was watching the kids at the time. She says all she wants is to be back with her kids.
