UPDATE: Company statement released on closure of Ryan's in Bluefield

Posted:

A Bluefield, Virginia restaurant closes down Thursday morning.

Employees at Ryan's in the College Plaza Shopping Center were surprised to find out they lost their jobs. Workers tell WVVA that preparations for lunch had already begun when they received the news.

In a news release issued by Ovation Brands, a subsidiary of Food Management Partners, "74 under-performing Old Country Buffet, Hometown Buffet, Ryan’s, Fire Mountain and Country Buffet restaurants throughout the United States" closed permanently.

The total number of workers affected by the closures is not known.

Although the overall number of employees affected by closures is large, employees of closed restaurants will be given the opportunity to apply for positions at operating stores, and we expect many to take advantage of that opportunity. Additionally, we will be adding staff to the operating restaurants, enabling us to provide the service levels our guests expect and deserve.

Ovation Brands was acquired by Food Management Partners in August 2015. Peter Donbavand, VP of Business Development, states the closures were necessary to "stabilize and enhance the performance of the company." Ryan's locations in Beckley and Princeton will remain open. According to Donbavand, remaining Ovation Brands' restaurants are financially viable and the plan is to continue operations. However, he stresses the fact that future market conditions cannot be predicted.

"We know that these decisions are not easy, however, we strongly believe that this direction is best for the long-term health of all brands," says Donbavand.

WVVA has reached out to Food Management Partners, the owners of the restaurant chain, for more details. We are still waiting for a response.

Bluefield, Virginia Town Manager Mike Watson has also tried to contact the parent company without success. He received no prior notice of the closure.

Employees from the Ryan's in Princeton were spotted moving items from the restaurant into a rental truck.  There are unconfirmed reports that other Ryan's restaurants in the U.S. were shutdown as well.

We'll bring you more information as it becomes available.
