Layoffs announced at McDowell County domestic abuse shelter

A McDowell County domestic abuse shelter cite "budget deficits" as a reason for eliminating positions on Wednesday.

In a news release issued by Stop Abusive Family Environments (SAFE) Domestic Violence/ Homeless Shelter, it states the shelter "has been forced to eliminate positions in order to maintain services under the deficits."

The number of people who lost their jobs is not known at this time. But WVVA has learned the Wyoming County Advocate position will now be covered by two Advocates in McDowell County. The offices in McDowell, Mercer, and Wyoming counties will remain open. There were also job loses at the SAFE shelter near Welch.

The staff reduction is blamed on a 50 percent  cut in HUD grant funding "that caused a financial hardship in meeting operational costs of the facility."

If more funding becomes available, "SAFE will make every attempt to reinstate those that were laid off."
