More details emerge in the shooting death of a Bluefield man over the weekend.

According to court documents, the victim, Dexter Mitchell, 34, was shot a dozen times and " had at least three gunshot wounds to the head."

Steven Williams, 22, of Rockbridge Street in Bluefield, WV is charged with first degree murder.

The shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. Saturday at the Quality Inn in Bluefield. When police arrived on scene, Mitchell was lying on his back in the main parking lot of the hotel.  Security video obtained by police showed a large crowd of people outside appearing to have a fight. The crowd then dispersed.

"The victim was seen standing in the parking lot when the suspect approached the victim firing numerous times at close range with a handgun. The victim then fell to the ground where he was found by the officers at the scene," according to the criminal complaint.

One witness told investigators that Williams walked up behind Mitchell and shot him multiple times in the back of the head and continued to fire the weapon while Mitchell was on the ground. County Medical Examiner Lori Clendenin found twelve gunshot wounds to the victim's body, including three to the head. There were also gunshot wounds discovered on Mitchell's right arm, chest, back, and shoulders.

Witnesses say Williams fled the scene in a white vehicle on U.S. Route 460. He turned himself into the Bluefield, WV Police Dept. around 2:00 p.m. Saturday. He is currently being held in Southern Regional Jail.
