Name released in Greenbrier County fatal shooting

GREENBRIER COUNTY (WVVA) -

Deputies have released the name of the man shot to death in Greenbrier County.

Clayton Ware, 33, of Fairlea died from a gunshot wound on Wednesday inside an apartment in Circle J Square.

According to the Greenbrier County Sheriff's Office, the shooter, Travis Ray Norwood, 29, says Ware tried to rob him. He claims they got into a severe altercation in his apartment when Ware was shot. Ware then went to an adjacent apartment  where he lived and died shortly there after.

An arrest has not been made. Deputies say the investigation is ongoing. 

"Upon conclusion of the investigation, including autopsy results from the State Medical Examiner’s Office, the findings will be presented to the Greenbrier County Prosecuting Attorney," according to the news release.

On Wednesday January 20, 2016, at approximately 4:15 pm, members of the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office, WV State Police and Lewisburg Police Department responded to a 911 call of a shooting at an apartment located at Circle J Square in Fairlea, WV.

Upon arrival of officers on the scene Clayton Ware, age 33 of Fairlea, WV, was located in his apartment after having sustained serious injuries.  Initial investigation revealed that Travis Ray Norwood, age 29 of Fairlea, WV, reported being the victim of an alleged robbery attempt by Mr. Ware.  The two individuals had apparently spent some time together that afternoon before a severe altercation occurred between the two of them in the Norwood apartment, resulting in a gunshot wound to Clayton Ware.  Mr. Ware subsequently returned to the adjacent apartment where he would succumb to his injuries shortly thereafter.

The investigation is continuing as officers attempt to determine the sequence of events leading up to and during the shooting. 

Upon conclusion of the investigation, including autopsy results from the State Medical Examiner’s Office, the findings will be presented to the Greenbrier County Prosecuting Attorney.

Deputy S. W. Hudnall, of the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office, is the lead investigator.

FAIRLEA, W. VA. -- A man is dead following an altercation in Greenbrier County.

Dispatchers say the call came in a little after 4 Wednesday, of a person that had been shot at the Circle J Square in Fairlea.  According to Sgt. Bart Baker with the Greenbrier County Sheriff's Office, one person was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.  The name of the victim is not being released at this time.  Several witnesses are being questioned and no one has been charged or placed in custody.

The Greenbrier County Sheriff's Office, Lewisburg Police Department and West Virginia State Police were all dispatched to the scene.  Greenbrier County Sheriff's Deputy Steve Hudnall is the lead investigating officer in the case.
