Verdict reached in McDowell County murder trial

A verdict is reached in a McDowell County murder trial.

After a little more than one hour of deliberations, Dwight Key II , was found not guilty of first degree murder. He was charged with the Sept. 2013 shooting death of Jessie Lee Owens, 25, of Iaeger.

The trial began on Monday. Key was free on bond prior to the trial. 


A McDowell County man is on trial for first degree murder in connection with the shooting death of another man.

Dwight Key II, 39, of Iaeger, WV is charged with the murder of Jessie Lee Owens, 25, also of Iaeger. Deputies say Owens died in Sept. 2013 from a gun shot wound to the head. The shooting happened in the Lickbranch area of McDowell County. 

Key was arrested soon after Owens' death. He was indicted in February 2015. Key has been out on bond.

Jury selection began Monday morning. Witnesses began to testify later in the afternoon. The trial continues on Tuesday and is expected to last a total of three days.
