Mercer County man is sentenced in DUI crash with child in vehicle

MERCER COUNTY (WVVA) -

A Mercer County man involved in a DUI crash nearly a year ago is sentenced on Thursday.

Michael Copley, 39, was arrested on January, 3, 2015 after a single-vehicle rollover in the Athens area. According to court documents, a child in the passenger seat was taken to Princeton Community Hospital. At the time, Copley told troopers the passenger was his girlfriend's son. He failed a field sobriety test.

Copley was indicted in February on a number of charges. He entered a plea to child neglect creating substantial risk of injury or death and attempt to commit a felony.

Judge Omar Aboulhosn sentenced Copley to one to five years in prison for the child neglect conviction and one to three years in prison for attempt to commit a felony. The sentences will run consecutively. Copley was given credit for 363 days of time served.
