School employee hurt by boiler malfunction in Tazewell County

TAZEWELL COUNTY (WVVA) -

UPDATE: A boiler malfunction at Tazewell High School sends one man to the hospital and forces students to evacuate.

According to George Brown, Assistant Superintendent of Tazewell County Public Schools, the accident occurred at 11 a.m. on Thursday while a custodian was performing maintenance on the school's boiler. Brown says a flash fire engulfed the custodian. As of Thursday afternoon, the injured man was awaiting transport to a burn unit at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. 

The name of the injured man is not being released by the school.

Students were evacuated from a Tazewell County high school after a boiler malfunction.

School officials tell WVVA  a janitor at Tazewell High School was taken to the hospital a little after 11 a.m. on Thursday. We don't know the extent of the injuries.

Students have since returned to their classroom.
