Power outage forces school closure in Bluefield, WV


BLUEFIELD, WV (WVVA) More than a thousand people are without power in Mercer County.

High wind toppled trees and downed utility lines in Bluefield, WV, forcing school officials to shutdown Memorial Primary School for the day. 

As of 3:30 p.m., there are 423 homes and businesses in Mercer County without electrical service. In Fayette County, 578 Appalachian Power customers are without service. There are also outages reported in Kanawha (1,057), Logan (173), and Wyoming (128) counties in West Virginia and Dickenson (130), Giles (129), and Wise (304) counties in Virginia. Around 8 a.m. Wednesday, a large tree fell on Bland Road in Bluefield, WV knocking down multiple power lines. Crews with APCO say it will take several hours to clean up the mess and restore service. The roadway has since reopened.
