Bluefield, VA - Bluefield College will launch its first four week accelerated term to serve as an intersession between the school’s traditional fall and spring terms. Beginning December 2015 and condensed into an accelerated online format, the Fall Term III (Intersession) is designed to give students the opportunity to engage in study outside their normal academic program or to make up or get ahead of their college work requirements.
Open to current, new, transient and visiting students, the compressed four-week online term will run December 14, 2015 through January 10, 2016, allowing the typical 13 weeks weeks of course material to be covered in four accelerated weeks of study.
Eight classes will be offered during the Fall Term III (Intersession), including a core curriculum class, two math classes, and one course each in business, communication, English, history, and theatre.
The core curriculum class is a combo two-credit-hour lecture and one-credit-hour lab in Personal Wellness. The two math courses are both three-credit-hour classes in College Algebra and Mathematics of Finance.
The business class is a three-credit-hour course in Personal Finance. The communication offering is a three-credit-hour course on the Fundamentals of Speech. The English option is a three-credit-hour class in Literature Appreciation, while the history class is a three-credit-hour course on the History of London, and the theatre offering is a three-credit-hour class on Theatre Appreciation.
All classes will run December 14, 2015 through January 10, 2016 and will be offered completely online, but are open to both online and traditional students. Students may take only one class during the intersession. The classes will be offered at a 45 percent reduced rate from the normal online tuition. Fall Term III (Intersession) rates will be $200 per credit hour or $600 for a three-credit-hour course.
Students will have online access to course syllabi and materials as early as December 10, four days prior to the start of classes, offering ample time in advance to prepare for the accelerated term. Administrative offices for Bluefield College will be closed December 24, 2015 through January 3, 2016. Emails and phone calls during this time will be responded to after employees return to the campus. Online student success coach Cathy Payne (firstname.lastname@example.org) and associate vice president for online and distance education Andrew Lawrence (email@example.com) will be available for students by email during this time, excluding Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day.
In addition, BC’s Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) will provide academic support for students during the Fall Term III (Intersession). Students may contact ACE by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 276-326-4220. Available services include Grammarly for writing support and SmartThinking for course specific support.
Students will be expected to read and complete assignments each day throughout the four-week term with the exception of Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day. The most successful students will be those willing to commit and dedicate the appropriate time and effort to each lesson along the course’s path of instruction.
