Tennant talks to students about voter registration at Fayette County high school

SMITHERS (WVVA) West Virginia Secretary of State Natalie Tennant spoke to a group of seniors, teachers, and staff at Valley High School on Tuesday about the importance of voter registration.

The visit came one month after the Secretary of State's office unveiled a new online voter registration application system. Since its inception, the office has received 1,082 submissions.

"Online voter registration has seen great success in other states and I knew it would be well received here in West Virginia," said Tennant. "But these numbers tell a story far bigger than people simply having another method to submit their voter registration application. It demonstrates how our society has come to expect technological advances in the election process and we're proud to be able to meet those expectations while still maintaining the security of our election process. I'm very happy to see this number in the first month and consider it very successful."

In addition to voter registration, Tennant said the new site also allows currently registered voters to easily make updates to their voter record, such as a change of address or party affiliation. West Virginia joins twenty-five other states currently offering online voter registration.
