(WVVA) A West Virginia teacher who saved her students from a gun-wielding classmate will be honored Friday on the Steve Harvey Show.

Twila Smith, a history teacher at Philip Barbour High School in Philippi, WV, is credited for keeping her cool and calming down the 14-year-old gunman.

The incident happened on August 25. During her appearance on the Steve Harvey show, Smith says the juvenile suspect entered her classroom with a loaded gun and said "people are going to die today." The 14-year-old then looked at Smith and said "you're going to die today."

Smith says she just keep talking to the juvenile trying to convince him to let students leave the classroom. Though he held a gun to her head, Smith was able to convince him to let her stand by the door when the bell rang so she could tell incoming students to go elsewhere.

“I knew that I might not get out, but no one else was coming in the room,” Smith tells Steve Harvey.

Police started negotiations with the juvenile suspect. He eventually agreed to let everyone leave the classroom. The student remained there alone for sometime. He then allowed his minister to come in and talk with him. The juvenile suspect walked out of the school with his minister and surrendered to authorities. No one was hurt in the incident.

Smith will be honored on Friday as a "Harvey's Hero." You can watch her full interview with Steve Harvey on WVVA at 2 p.m. on Friday. Her interview will air about 25-30 minutes into the show.
