UPDATE: Victims identified in deadly wreck on Sandstone Mountain


Troopers say a Wyoming County man caused a fatal crash before losing control and killing himself and a passenger. 

The wreck happened on Wednesday, at 6:09 p.m. on I-64 in the Sandstone Mountain area of Raleigh County

According to the West Virginia State Police, the driver one vehicle hit another vehicle in the rear causing it to flip multiple times over an embankment. The driver of the second vehicle, identified as Julia F. James, 54, of Lexington, Kentucky was ejected from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger was flown to Charleston Area Medical Center. The extent of her injuries is unknown. 

Troopers say the driver of vehicle who caused the crash continued down the interstate for about a mile before losing control and flipping multiple times over an embankment. The driver, Wesley C. Lester, 44, and a passenger, Brenda L. Lester, 45, both from Wyoming County, were pronounced dead at the scene. 

The crash is being reconstructed by crash investigation specialists with the WVSP.

SANDSTONE, W.Va. (Associated Press) - Three people have died in two separate accidents that occurred minutes apart on Interstate 64 on Sandstone Mountain.

Multiple media outlets report that one vehicle went over an escape ramp. Another went over a guardrail.

The accidents occurred around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday. West Virginia State Police are investigating.
