Matthew Schwartz joined WVVA as the Weekend Sports Anchor/MMJ in May of 2016, following a career in newspapers as a Sports Writer/Reporter at the Martinsville Bulletin in Martinsville, Va and prior to that as a Production Assistant at WMC-TV in Memphis, Tennessee.
He was born and raised in Richmond, Va, or Goochland County, just 15 minutes west of Richmond to specific. He is a 2010 graduate of Goochland High School where he played baseball and football and was also a co-anchor for his school's daily news broadcast. From there he moved on from the Commonwealth to the volunteer state and the land of the blues in Memphis, Tennessee where he attended the University of Memphis. He graduated in 2014 with a degree in broadcast journalism.
While at Memphis, Matthew interned at CBS affiliate WREG News Channel 3 and sports radio station Sports 56 WHBQ. Matthew was also very involved in several activities across campus, which included duties as a daily co-anchor of a morning sports talk show host, play-by-play broadcaster for University of Memphis men's basketball and football. He also served as a peer mentor, campus orientation and tour guide and a proud member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.
Besides his love for barbecue, Matthew is a huge fan of all University of Memphis athletics. He is also a dedicated Washington D.C. sports fan. So if there is a Nationals or Redskins game on, you are all but likely to find Matthew in front of a screen watching.
