Mullens police officer, ATV driver injured in overnight wreck


UPDATE: According to Mullens Police Chief Ray Toler, Officer Eric Clay of Beckley, WV was hit last night by an ATV driver.  Officer Clay has left the hospital and is home safe with his family.


Mullens Police Chief Ray Toler notified WVVA News that one of his officers was injured in a wreck overnight Friday into Saturday.

Both the officer and the driver of a side-by-side were hospitalized.  The ATV driver had to be airlifted to a Charleston hospital for further treatment.

Below is the email sent to WVVA News shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday.  WVVA News will update this story as we receive more information.  The Wyoming County Sheriff's Department is investigating, according to Chief Toler.

Approximately midnight Friday night Saturday morning a Mullens police officer was injured when a subject on a side by side with no lights hit his patrol car at a high rate of speed the subject on the side by side was ejected on to the roadway the officer was rear ended at approx 60 to 75 mph .Mullens fire department and jan care ambulance service responded to the scene .the officer was transported to Raleigh general hospital and is being treated at this time . The driver of the side by side was airlifted from Sophia to a charleston hospital . The wyoming county sheriffs department  is checking the accident .the names of the officer and driver have not been released pending notification of family ....thanks chief ray toler
