Concord University Beckley Center to host History Alive performance

Posted:

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University Beckley Center will host a History Alive Performance of Cherokee Indian Chief Ostenaco on Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. The event will be held at the Erma Byrd Center, Beaver, W.Va., in room E-10. It will be free and open to the public.

The performance will be conducted by Doug Wood of Hurricane, W.Va., and will detail the life and legacy of famed Cherokee Indian Chief Ostenaco, whose alliance with the British in the French and Indian War contributed significantly to the spread of English speakers in what is now West Virginia.

Wood will “give a monologue as the Cherokee Indian chief, then answer questions in character, then out of character, as the scholar,” according to Concord University instructor of communication arts and event coordinator, Karen Vuranch.

Chief Ostenaco lived from 1703 to 1780 and was known as a great warrior among his peers. He was also regarded as a fantastic leader and speaker by British colonial leaders. His contributions to the British in the French and Indian War were very critical to the formation of West Virginia as it is today.

This History Alive performance in sponsored by the Concord University Beckley Center. Funding for this event is provided by the West Virginia Humanities Council. For more information, contact Karen Vuranch at kvuranch@concord.edu
