LATEST: Arrest made in Glen Lyn store burglary

On September 8, 2015 at 5:47 p.m. deputies from the McDowell County, WV Sheriff’s Department contacted the Giles County Sheriff’s Office in reference to the investigation surrounding the break-in at the State Line Market convenience store in Glen Lyn, VA.

McDowell deputies shared with Giles County Sheriff’s Office investigators that they had detained 18 year-old James Edward Lester, who had been operating a U-Haul. McDowell deputies had received a tip from a citizen who had seen the Glen Lyn break-in story on the news and thought that Lester may have been involved.

A search of the vehicle turned up several cartons of cigarettes, candy, and various other tobacco products. Deputies also located a hat matching the description of the one worn by the suspect on video surveillance. McDowell deputies subsequently arrested Lester for DUI.

After getting confirmation of Lester’s physical description, Giles County Sheriff’s Office investigators traveled to Welch, WV to speak to him. Shortly after investigators spoke to Lester, warrants were issued in Giles County for two counts of breaking and entering and two counts of grand larceny in connection with the State Line Market break-in.

Lester will be held in West Virginia until the extradition process is complete and he is brought back to Virginia to face charges. The Giles County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the viewing public, news media, and the McDowell County Sheriff’s Department for their help in this investigation.

Date:  09/07/15

On September 7, 2015 at 6:41 a.m. the Giles County Sheriff’s Office received a call that a break-in had occurred at the State Line Market Convenience Store in Glen Lyn, VA.  Deputies responded to discover that someone had gained entry into the store and stole multiple containers of cigarettes, among other items.

Investigators were called to the scene where they collected evidence.  Among that evidence, was a copy of the store surveillance video.  The video shows a man in the store shortly after 4:00 a.m. on September 7, 2015.  He was using what appears to be an item of clothing to mask his face.  At one point, however, the suspect’s face is uncovered.

The suspect arrived and left the store driving a U-Haul.  He is described as a white male with short hair, thin frame, with tattoos on each shoulder.  He was wearing a NY Yankees ball cap, a tank top style undershirt, baggy jeans, and tennis shoes during the break-in.

The Giles County Sheriff’s Office asks anyone with information on this case to contact investigators at 540-921-3842.  Investigators believe that the suspect will attempt to sell the cigarettes on the street for a discounted price.  They are asking anyone who receives that proposition to contact them.
