SHOOTING UPDATE: Wife killed by husband in apparent murder-suicide in Athens, WV


UPDATE (WVVA)- Detectives with the Mercer County Sheriff's Office say the shooting in Athens on Monday night was a murder-suicide.

According to Detectives W.E. Rose and J.D.Ellison, Laura Tawney called dispatchers stating that she was in a domestic altercation with her husband, Fredrick Tawney.

The call came in at 7:06PM. Several minutes later, Laura Tawney said her husband, Fredrick, was pointing a gun at her. That's when Detectives say the phone went dead.

Fredrick Tawney called Mercer County Dispatchers minutes later, he confessed to shooting his wife and told dispatchers he was going to kill himself, Detectives say.

Deputies with the Mercer County Sheriff's Office arrived at the home on Red Sulphur Turnpike at 7:18 PM. They found Fredrick Tawney dead in the front yard of his home.

Detectives say he suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound, adding he used a 12-guage shotgun.  

After heading to the back of the home, deputies found Laura Tawney dead on the back porch. Detectives say she was murdered. 

Their bodies were transported to the morgue at Princeton Community Hospital. 


ATHENS (WVVA)- Two people were taken to the hospital after a shooting Monday night in Mercer County.    

   According to 911 Dispatchers,the call came in at 7:00 PM on September 7, 2015.

    The shooting happened on Red Sulphur Turnpike in Athens, say dispatchers.

    Mercer County 911 reports that two people were transported to the hospital.Their condition is unknown at this time.

    The Mercer County Sheriff's Office and Princeton Rescue Squad were called to the scene.
