MERCER COUNTY (WVVA) Testimony has begun in the trial against a man charged in the September 2014 shooting death of his wife.

Johnnie Ray Farley, 61, of Raleigh County faces a first degree murder charge. Farley originally reported his wife missing. According to court documents, a few days late Farley confessed to shooting Lynnette Denise Farley in the chest with a shotgun. Her body was buried in a shallow grave on property he owns on Egeria Road in Mercer County. During the confession, Farley told investigators he placed a shovel and a digging tool called a mattock in his truck prior to the shooting.

Jury selection began Tuesday morning. Prosecutors called their first witness in the afternoon. West Virginia State Trooper S.G. Milam testified to Farley's confession. Several pieces of evidence were also introduced, including the alleged murder weapon and the shovel used to bury the victim.

The trial continues on Wednesday.
