Car crash leaves one dead, three injured on I-81 in Pulaski County, VA


PULASKI COUNTY, VA (WVVA) A car crash leaves one dead and sends three others to the hospital in Pulaski County, VA.

Wheelchair bound 80-year-old Charles Cooper, Jr. of Tuscaloosa, Alabama was pronounced dead on the scene.

According to a news release from the Virginia State Police, a 2015 dodge caravan was traveling southbound on I-81 around 4:17 this afternoon, when the vehicle veered off the left side of the road and struck a guardrail near mile marker 93.

The driver of the car, 63-year-old Milton Bell, tried to correct the problem, but instead over corrected and lost control again. The vehicle then ran off the left side of the highway and hit the guardrail again. The car then flipped at least once before stopping in the middle of the road.

The driver of the vehicle, Milton Bell, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama is the son-in-law of Cooper. Bell, along with his wife 61-year-old Carolyn Cooper Bell, and son 29-year-old Aaron Bell sustained minor injuries and were transported to the Pulaski Community Hospital.

All four of the victims were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, and Charles Cooper's wheelchair was secured.

According to the news release Trooper Brandon Barnett of the Virginia State Police after an initial investigation he discovered that the driver, Milton Bell, fell asleep before losing control of the car.

Bell is being charged with Reckless Driving.
