UPDATE: Investigators identify local hiker killed in fall

SUMMERS COUNTY (WVVA) -

SANDSTONE, WV- Investigators have released the name of a hiker killed near Sandstone Falls Overlook in Summers County.

According to Dave Bieri with the National Park Service, Felicia Redden, 26, of Cool Ridge, WV died Sunday night after a fall.

Investigators say Redden and another hiker were found about 80 feet down a trail near the overlook. 

The second hiker has been identified as Cody Buckland, 20, of Beaver, WV. He received treatment Sunday night for non life-threatening injuries at Raleigh General Hospital. We do not know if Buckland is still receiving medical care.

SANDSTONE, W.Va. (AP & WVVA)  - Authorities say a hiker has died after falling off a cliffside trail overlooking the New River Gorge National River in southern West Virginia.

The Summers County Office of Emergency Services says two hikers slipped Sunday night on a trail near the Sandstone Falls Overlook, which is about 600 feet above the river. One of the hikers called 911, and emergency crews found the pair about 80 feet below the trail.

The EMS office says one of the hikers was declared dead at the scene and the other was taken to Raleigh General Hospital with undisclosed injuries.

The hikers' names weren't immediately available. WVVA has learned the hiker who died was 26-years-old. Investigators say she fell 60 feet. The other hiker, a 20-year-old man.  received injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening.

Summers County EMS confirms one of the hikers died from the fall.  The other hiker was taken to Raleigh General Hospital with unknown injuries.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Firefighters, EMS, and law enforcement are trying to rescue two hikers Sunday night in Summers County.

Dispatch says around 8:30 p.m. they got the call that the hikers fell off of the Sandstone Falls overlook.

Because they landed in such a remote location, rescuers had to access them by boat.

9-1-1 says their condition is unknown, however a life-flight request was canceled.
