ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - Thirty years after accusing a Bland County pilot of flying illegal drugs into southwest Virginia, prosecutors have dropped all charges against a man they say is likely dead.

The Roanoke Times reports that U.S. Attorney Anthony Giorno notified the court of its intention to end the case against Wallace S. Thrasher last week, citing unspecified evidence that Thrasher is dead.

U.S. District Judge Glen Conrad dismissed the case Monday, thirty years after Thrasher was accused in February 1985 of participating in a drug conspiracy.

Authorities said Thrasher flew marijuana from Belize to the U.S. during the 1980s. Court papers filed in Florida years ago said he died in a plane crash in Belize on Nov. 4, 1985, at the age of 44, but some federal authorities in Roanoke suspected he survived.
