CAMPBELLS CREEK, WV - The search for the body of a man believed to have drown has been called off for tonight.

Crews were called around 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon about a man swimming in the Kanawha River near Campbells Creek.

Divers were in the water for more than two hours searching for a man in his late 20's.

Malden firefighters and Natural Resource officers say the man was walking into the river when he stepped off a sand bar.

Firefighters says once the man fell in the river he never came back up. The conditions on the river on Sunday made it difficult for crews to see much of anything.

There have been five drownings in the area the last month.

First responders say to know the difference between swimming in the river and a pool and to wear a life jacket.

You may remember, just last Sunday, two young boys drowned in a creek off the New River in Summers County. They were not wearing life jackets.
